MANKATO &045;&160;This group of Albert Lea boys’ tennis players just finds ways to keep adding to its list of impressive accomplishments.
Thursday the Tigers advanced all four of its individual participants at the sub-section in Mankato.
&8220;It was an Albert Lea day and we are all continuing on,&8221; said Tiger head coach Tom Dyrdal.
It was the first time since tennis went to the sub-section setup that Albert Lea advanced all of its participants.
The Tigers advanced the four teams out of the 14 singles and doubles squads competing while Hutchinson moved on two and both Mankato West and Faribault advanced one each.
Corey Dieser and Andrew Dyrdal received a bye in the first round as a result of being the top doubles team. When they did step on the court they took down a team from Mankato East 6-4, 6-1 to advance.
Josh Vu and Josh Svendsen had the hardest draw of the day taking on Mankato East’s Nos. 1 and 3 singles players who were put together in doubles. The Albert Lea duo responded by beating them 6-2, 6-2.
&8220;I think they really opened up some eyes with their play,&8221; said coach Dyrdal.
In singles action, Philippe Perrin dominated his one match to advance winning with ease 6-1, 6-1.
The Tigers’ perfect day was completed by senior Greg Peterson who needed three rackets to win his first match in three sets 7-6, 1-6, 7-5 before rolling on to the next round with a 6-1, 7-5 victory over a Hutchinson player.
&8220;Greg broke his racket earlier so he started with my assistant coach’s racket then tried Philippe’s racket before settling on Corey Dieser’s backup,&8221; said coach Dyrdal. &8220;He got the job done and he did it playing his style in both matches.&8221;
The Tigers will now face the top teams from the north section Wednesday at Gustavus Adolphus for the section competition.
