Maxine Krecker, 83, Hendersonville, NC

Maxine Krecker died Tuesday, Dec. 12, 2006, at her home in Hendersonville, N.C., of Parkinson&8217;s Disease. She was 83.
She was the daughter of the late Edna and Ray Machacek of Glenville. She graduated from what is now Mankato State University after which she taught school in Hollandale, Excelsior and Cokato, Minn. She also taught in Ohio and Indiana where she lived in Highland for 32 years before moving to North Carolina.
She had been an elder of Hendersonville&8217;s Trinity Presbyterian Church and an elder, deacon and trustee of the First Presbyterian Church in Highland.
She led a campaign to create more parks for Highland where she served for five years on the town&8217;s Park and Recreation Board, two of them as president. During her presidency, the town acquired land for six parks, instituted a non-political system for hiring board employees, and became an independent governmental body.
For her work on the board, the Indiana Recreation Council honored her with its distinguish service award.
She was also a leader in a campaign to replace Highland&8217;s elected school board with an appointed one.
She was born May 19, 1923, in Waverly, Iowa, but grew up in Myrtle. She graduated from Austin High School.
She is survived by her husband of 57 years, Frederic; daughters Barbara Tousey of Tryon, N.C., Margaret of Madison, Wis., son Jon of Lafayette, Colo.; sisters, Arlene Cherney of Glenville and Mesa, Arizona, Betty Raskin of Portland, Ore., Caroline O&8217;Connell of Montecito, Calif., Alice Gleason of Glenville, and a brother, Robert Machacek of Arvada, Colo. She is also survived by three grandsons, Seth, Nicholas and David Tousey of Tryon.
A memorial service will be held at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to Four Seasons Hospice and Palliative Care, 571 South Allen Road, Flat Rock, NC 28731.
