Arthur Sherman, 97, Albert Lea

Funeral services for Arthur L. Sherman, age 97, of Albert Lea will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at the Hayward Lutheran Church. Rev. John Malm will officiate. Interment will be in the Hayward Cemetery. Arthur died Thursday, Feb. 1, 2007, at Thorne Crest Retirement Center.

Arthur L. Sherman was born March 5, 1909, to William and Emma (Allison) Sherman in Nevis. He attended School in Huntington Park, Calif. On March 27, 1929, Arthur was united in marriage to Hazel Olson in Hayward. The couple lived in Albert Lea area until 1947 when they moved to Dennison and owned and operated the Dennison Locker Plant until 1961. Art and Hazel moved back to Albert Lea and owned and operated Sherman&8217;s Fourth Street Grocery until 1973. After retiring from the grocery store, Art worked part time at Clarks Grove Lumber Co. The couple moved into Thorne Crest Retirement apartments in February of 2000. Art enjoyed playing cribbage and was an avid Minnesota Twins fan.

Survivors include children: Beverly Solinger and husband, Donald of Apple Valley, Jean Benson and husband, David of Stone Lake, Wis., and Bill Sherman and wife, Sue of Albert Lea; eight grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren, and five great-great-grandchildren; and sisters-in-law: Opal Petersen of Albert Lea, Gerry Johnson and husband, Donald of Pinellas Park, Fla., and Faye Olson of Albert Lea.

Art was preceded in death by his wife, Hazel and granddaughter, Jacquelyn Solinger.

Art will be greatly missed by his loving family and many friends and the friendships he developed at Thorne Crest.
