Dr. Alfred G. Sherman, 94, of Edina, died on Sept. 10, 2007.

He was preceded in death by wife, Lois.

He is survived by his children, Julie (Dr. Philip) Eckman of Duluth, Martha (Larry) Foreman of Denver, Colo., Diane (Charles) Anderson of Forest Lake, Deborah (Neal) Enzenauer of Minnetonka and Dr. Charles F. (Jeanne) Sherman of Watertown, S.D.; 11 grandchildren; and three great-granddaughters.

Dr. Alfred G. Sherman (Schlauderaff) was born in 1913 and grew up at Glencoe, graduated from Glencoe High School and received his premedical education at St. Olaf College. He graduated from the University of Minnesota Medical School with a Doctor of Medicine degree in 1939 after serving an internship at Minneapolis General Hospital. In 1934 he legally changed his surname to Sherman. He began a family and industrial practice in Kingman, Ariz, and in 1941 was called to active duty in the U.S. Navy Medical Corps Reserve. Subsequently, he joined the regular U.S. Navy (MC) as a Lieutenant (JG). After two years of sea duty in the North Atlantic and African Theater, he was transferred to the Navy School of Aviation Medicine, Pensacola, Fla., and received the designation of Flight Surgeon, U.S. Navy. After this, his duty was with aviation training units and aircraft carriers, USS Monterey and USS Sangamon. On May 4, 1945 the USS Sangamon was attacked by three Japanese suicide planes, one of which crashed through the flight deck and exploded inside the hangar deck, causing such severe damage that the ship was ordered back to Norfolk, Va., for scrap. In 1947, Commander (MC) Alfred G. Sherman resigned from the U.S. Navy in order to specialize in ophthalmology in the graduate medical school at the U of M. He practiced this specialty in Albert Lea from 1951 to retirement in 1981. In 1941, he and Lois Pierce of New Richland, were married. His wife died in 2000.

&8220;Al&8221; was fond of gardening, hunting, fishing, music and art, which he studied after retirement, especially watercolor painting. He served as organist for church services on board the USS Sangamon and at the Naval Aviation Reserve Station, Glenview, Ill.

Memorials preferred to the U of M Medical Foundation and Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd Foundation. Interment will be in Lakewood Cemetery, Albert Lea. The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd, 4801 France Ave. S., Minneapolis.
