Rebels tennis team heading back to state

ST. PETER &8212; It&8217;s been three years in the making, but the United South Central girls&8217; tennis team is headed back to the state tournament after disposing of St. Peter 4-3 Thursday afternoon.

&8220;It&8217;s really exciting, its been three years,&8221; said head coach Randy Halvorson. &8220;The girls played well and are ready to continue with their season.&8221;

Andrea Allis lost her No.1 singles match 3-6, 3-6 then was followed by an impressive win by Carolyn Schmitz at No.2 6-7, 6-1, 7-6. Jordan Anderson fell at No. 3 singles with scores of 3-6, 1-6, while Taylor Allis finished off singles play at the No.4 spot with a 6-1, 6-2 victory.

In doubles competition, the No.1 team of Jessica Stensrud and Molly Yokiel lost the first set 4-6 then came back to dominate the next two 6-0, 6-3. At No.2 doubles Kellie Robbins and Emma Stenzel cruised to a win with scores of 6-2, 6-0, while the team of Amanda Huper and Cami Christianson lost 4-6, 6-3, 2-6 at No. 3 doubles.

To add to the drama of going to state the Rebels will be facing St. James, the team that beat USC the past two years in the section championship in the first round. USC and St. James will face off Oct. 24 at noon at the Nicollet Tennis Center.
