WELLS &8212; The USC/AC boys&8217; cross country team finished first at the &8220;No Frills&8221; Invitational Tuesday, with a score of 32 points. LaCrescent was second with 42.
The meet, held at Oakview Golf Course near Freeborn, drew good reviews from the visiting athletes and coaches.
&8220;Although it was really windy, there were a number of good times turned in. The running surface at Oakview is the best we run on all season,&8221; said USC/AC head coach Kent Viesselman.
The girls&8217; finished in third place, behind a very strong team from LaCrescent and the team from Medford.
&8220;Three of our top six runners
ran their fastest time of the season, and two more only missed their best time by one second,&8221; said Viesselman. &8220;They appear to be at their best coming into the important meets at the end of the season.&8221;
The girls turned in their best performance of the season. Amber Erickson (11th), Andree Escherich (15th), Shelby Little (16th), Abby Trio (19th) and Rachel Brown (25th) were the scorers for USC/AC.
&8220;The girls had the best team time (total time of top 5 runners) and best range (difference between No. 1 and No. 5 runners) of the season,&8221; Viesselman said. &8220;Shelby, Abby and Rachel had their best times, and Amber only missed by a second. Kelsey Munson, our No. 6, also only missed her best time by a second. It looks like we are peaking about right.&8221;
Jordan Haroldson finished first in the boys&8217; varsity competition with a season best time of 17:16. Jacob Elmer and Bryan Hauge were close behind,
placing fourth and fifth. Pete Trio (10th) and Paul Little (14th) rounded out the scorers for the Rebels.
