USC rally not enough against Bethlehem Academy

WELLS &045;&045; The United South Central softball team trailed 3-0 heading into the bottom of the fifth inning Monday night, but couldn&8217;t stop Bethlehem Academy in the sixth as it suffered a 5-3 loss at home.

The Cardinals scored runs in the first, third and fifth to stake a 3-1 lead and the Rebels (4-6 overall, 3-3 Gopher) briefly tied the game before surrendering three double in the sixth.

Bethlehem Academy collected five doubles in the game and two of three of them came in the sixth.

The Cardinals hit back-to-back doubles to grab the lead and the win to remain undefeated on the year.

The two teams hit the ball well on a cold night, combining for 18 hits.

&8220;Both teams knocked the ball around, but they got the bigger hits,&8221; USC coach Brad Huse said.

Junior Kellie Robbins started for the Rebels and pitched well. She allowed four earned runs and struck out nine over seven innings of work.

Senior Sam Sonnek and junior Jessica Schimek powered the offense as they both had two hits and an RBI for USC.

Sonnek slammed a home run and added a double in the loss.
