CANNON FALLS — There weren’t many fingers and toes left for coaches, players and parents to count as scores came in the clubhouse at the Cannon Golf Club during the Section 1AAA girl’s golf tournament.
Each party desperately wanted to know if someone had made it into the top five to qualify for the state tournament.
Albert Lea head coach Shawn Riebe watched to see if one of his own, Kelli Hanson, would make it into the top five.
Hanson did, shooting an 83 on the second day of the tournament to finish with a two-day total of 168.
“It feels great,” Hanson said. “I just have been thinking about it all year.”
After an opening round of 85 Thursday, Hanson shot a 42 on the front and a 41 on the back to put her in the range she and Riebe thought she needed to be in for a berth.
“We decided that 82 was going to be a number we were going to shoot for,” Riebe said. “She stuck with the game plan.”
Hanson had little room for error on the second day as the cut ended up at 172, one score away from her 168.
“I knew I was within reach of one or two strokes,” Hanson said. “I had to make sure I didn’t throw any strokes away because every stroke counted.”
The Tigers as a team finished seventh with a score of 752 and moved up from eighth by cutting eight strokes from their first round total.
Heather Griebrok shot a 96, three shots lower than the first day. Taylor Nelson added a 93, Abby Leach shaved five shots on day two for a 98. Alicia Heilman and Erin Brick both had 106s on the second day of the tournament.
The state tournament begins June 3 at Bunker Hills.
