Engineering students design launching machines

Each engineering team at Albert Lea High School was instructed to design and build a machine that would launch a projectile — a marshmallow. The design needed to include construction that would allow initial speeds and/or launch angles to be adjusted. The object of the activity was for each team to hit a target located at a range between 3 and 6 meters away. On launch day, the distance to the target was given, and each team had seven minutes to make appropriate calculations and one opportunity to launch its projectile to hit the target. After launch, each team marked, measured and calculated its error.
Students participating were Spencer Bonnerup, Kelsey Forman, Logan Ferrie, Tim Hauge, Annika Smed, Liam Moore, James Swenson, Emily Klick, Tyler Petersen, Andrew Knutson, Tyler Hitchcock, William (Evan) Sturtz, Evan Anderson, Matthew Van Fossen, Jake Winkels, Mike Rauenhorst, Evan Nolander, Brian Staloch and Alex Amundson.
