Fun with duct tape

Sixteen-year-old Meghan Sipple has a sticky obsession.

Almost two years ago, during her winter break from school, Sipple saw a roll of duct tape sitting on the floor and thought to herself, “Hmm, maybe I can do something with that.”

She proceeded to make a gray duct tape jacket with “Sipple” written in red tape on the back and a yellow and red stripe on the bottom.

After that, the hobby just took off.

Now she’s always fully-stocked with 13 different colors of duct tape from her main supplier, Wal-Mart, and has even become an official member of ducktapeclub.com.

The only color of tape she doesn’t have from Wal-Mart is camouflage because its not really used that much, she said.

“It’s different,” Sipple said of her hobby. “But I don’t like doing things everybody else does. They have their hobbies and I have mine.”

So far, some of the items she’s made out of duct tape include a large popcorn box Halloween costume, pillows, an American flag, a tuxedo and a prom dress, to name a few.

And all of her clothing items have a “Sip Inc.” tag on the inside, just like professional items made out of cloth.

This past semester in her independent study clothing class at Albert Lea High School, she made her tuxedo.

While all the other class members were making clothes the old-fashioned way with actual cloth, she made them out of the tape.

To make her tuxedo, she took all the measurements just as if she were going to sew it normally and then planned out how she would construct the item based on how many strips of tape she’d need.

At the end of the class, the students put on a fashion show with their designs.

“They were shocked,” Sipple said, of the students’ reactions to her tuxedo. “A lot of people didn’t know I was into duct tape.”

Sipple, who will be a junior this year, said she plans to enter the Stuck at Prom duct tape scholarship contest next year with her designs.

She’s also planning on entering a Halloween costume duct tape contest.

Sipple said her friends are amazed when they see the stuff she’s made, and she doesn’t know anybody else that makes stuff out of duct tape in the area.

Outside of her duct tape hobby, she also enjoys playing football, soccer and basketball, and is the Albert Lea High School mascot.

“Not too many people can say they were that,” she said.

Though her hobby may be unusual, Sipple encouraged people to give it a try.

“They should try it sometime,” she said. “It’s actually really fun.”
