The New Richland amateur baseball team lost 6-5 Sunday to Waterville at home.
The Reds opened the scoring in the third inning when Seth Tukua and Vinnie VanEngelenburg singled. With two outs Aaron Gillilard doubled to right center to drive in both Tukua and VanEngelenburg. Tony Somage brought Gillilard home with a single and New Richland led 3-0.
The Indians came back in the fourth and scored four runs to take a 4-3 lead. Waterville added two more runs in the seventh for a 6-3 advantage.
The Reds tried to make a comeback in the seventh and eighth innings, but only found a run in each frame to cut the game to 6-5.
In the eighth inning New Richland had a chance for more, but Brady Hullopeter was cut down at the plate, trying to score on a basehit to left center by Tukua. Indians left fielder Ken Wollin bobbled the ball and the Reds waved Hullopeter around third, but the relay beat him at the plate.
VanEngelenburg started for New Richland and pitched nine full innings and allowed six runs on seven hits and struck out eight in the loss. He also added four base knocks.
