Valedictorian named John M. Morrison Scholarship winner

Jacob Winkels of Albert Lea is the recipient of a $1,500 John M. Morrison Scholarship.
Winkels is the son of Dwaine and Dawn Winkels and graduated from Albert Lea High School. He plans to attend the University of North Dakota and major in mathematics. He was one of the 2008 Albert Lea High School valedictorians and graduated in the top 10 percent of his class with honors.
He placed second in the National for Business Professionals of America competition. He finished creating the 2008 I-MAG Literary Magazine for publications as co-editor. He received the director’s award in orchestra.
The John M. Morrison Scholarship is awarded each year to an outstanding student who intends to enroll at an accredited four-year college of university. A student may apply to the program if he or she is a high school senior graduating from Albert Lea High School. The recipient of the John M. Morrison scholarship is selected competitively on the basis of academic record and personal achievements. This scholarship program was established in 2001 in honor of John M. Morrison, who is the former chairman and chief executive officer and presently a director of Allina hospitals and clinics. Morrison is a graduate of Albert Lea High School and the University of Minnesota.
Scholarship Management Services, a division of Scholarship America, the nation’s largest designer and manager of scholarship and tuition reimbursement programs for corporations, foundations, associations and individuals is located in St. Peter and administers the Morrison scholarship.
