Albert Lea City Hall may soon see some more changes.
On Monday, the Albert Lea City Council will vote on whether to approve an agreement with the Albert Lea Public Library Foundation for a used book store and coffee kiosk in the lobby of the lower level.
All proceeds of sales would be used for gifts to the library.
“I think it’s a nice way to create another usable space for people to gather,” City Manager Victoria Simonsen said. “A way for people to get their used books in the recycling bin and not the garbage.”
If it is passed, the agreement would outline the space that would be made available to the foundation, along with the responsibilities of both parties.
The used book store would be open at least 15 hours each week, and the arrangement would be reviewed annually.
On Monday, the council will also:
– Hear a request from several groups in town to encourage the City Council to designate the official city flower as the red geranium.
This spring, several groups coordinated a “Bloom Where You’re Planted” campaign, encouraging people to plant red geraniums at their homes and businesses. There was a positive response.
Simonsen said the red geranium is a hardy and showy plant that does well in this environment.
The city does not yet have a designated city flower; however, the state flower is the pink and white lady slipper.
Simonsen said the groups who organized the “Bloom Where You’re Planted” campaign stated they think that if the red geranium is officially designated as the city flower, then more and more people will start to get them.
– Vote on a resolution that would authorize limited deer hunting on city-owned land beginning Sept. 13 through Dec. 31.
Simonsen said the fixed-based operator at the airport reports that deer are still being sighted at the airport, indicating that a hunt should be held to keep deer moving away from the airport property.
This would be the 11th year of the deer management archery hunt and would be run in a fashion similar to past years.
To participate, applicants will pay an entry fee, and then 40 people will be randomly selected to hunt. Applications would be submitted to the city engineer’s office by 3 p.m. Sept. 5.
Simonsen said the number of applications has varied from year to year.
– Hear a request to change the parking hours on Newton Avenue between Clark Street and Fountain Street from two-hour parking to eight-hour parking. The request is being made because of an increased number of employees working in the downtown area.
