Westrum’s comments were blatantly racist

I am writing in response to a comment made by Mr. Paul Westrum in the July 8 edition. The comment “more than likely they were here illegally, and we were surprised they could read the sign” was so blatantly racist it is amazing to me that anyone would say that.

This country was founded by immigrants. Immigrants have brought diversity and cultural enrichment to this country for  many, many years. The majority of people who come here come trying to better their lives and the lives of their children. They work hard, sometimes harder than “Americans.” Not only do they come here and contribute to our society they do it while dealing with biggots.

My father came to America from Cuba in 1980 and has worked hard ever since. He came here with the intentions of living a happy life without racial persecution.

I’m glad to live in this country, and I’m proud to say I am an American. What I am not proud of admitting is that Mr. Westrum is too. Who is he to say such hateful and ignorant things. He must never have learned the age old saying, “If you don’t have anything nice to say, then don’t say anything at all.”

Messages such as the sign at the parade and the subsequent article in the paper are doing nothing but spreading hate and fear. Don’t hate your neighbor but do your best to help those less fortunate than you.
