Albert Lea should focus on being a green city

What a wonderful summer we had!

It has been over a year that I decided to become active in promoting environmental responsibility, encouraging people to adopt new ways to repair the damage we have done. I am very pleased with the response from the general public; it has been a fun experience.

Many people have shared with me their creative and clever ideas and solutions to improve our efforts. My students get an “A+” for their work, they inspire me.

I find that many of my efforts have great benefits:

– Our electrical bills are ridiculously low.

– I walk instead of driving short distances like I used to (less CO2).

– I carpool to go golfing (more fun and less use of gas).

– Shop at local farmers market (better food for better health).

– Lots less plastic and zero styrofoam in our home.

– No chemicals for weeding (great workout when you counteract forward and back bending that strengthens your back, plus more fresh air for your lungs).

– Composting (reduces waste).

So no doubt being green is a win-win situation. This summer I organized several events and asked for the meals. Amazing how little waste at the end of each event. Several local churches have been very supportive bringing awareness to caring for creation.

Last year I collected more than 500 signatures of Albert Lea residents who want Albert Lea to become a green city and contacted Mayor Randy Erdman the next day, as he recommended I sent a letter to the City Council. That was on Sept. 17, 2007. I have not heard from them. I contacted City Manager Victoria Simonson. She was very supportive and said she was going to form a committee. It has been a year, and I have not heard from her. Oh well, I guess there are more important issues than our environment on their agendas.

But all in all I am very pleased. After all, it is the efforts of the average individual that ultimately make a difference. I do appreciate so very much those of you who chose to be part of the solution. The future generations will be very proud of you! I continue the repair work.
