Haunted house, concert, comedy, breakfasts abound

Be ready for some chills and thrills!
The annual Fire Explorers’ and Police Explorers’ Haunted House kicks off this weekend at the Freeborn County Fairgrounds. Hours are from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday and Saturday. It will also be open on Halloween from 6 to 9 p.m.
Admission is $6 per person. Those bringing a non-perishable food item will have their admission discounted by $1.
Following is a roundup of other events happening in the area this weekend.
Friday, Oct. 24
– The Naeve Hospital Auxiliary will hold its holiday boutique in the gift shop at Albert Lea Medical Center from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.
– The Angela Burch and Ryan Heath art exhibit will be open at the Albert Lea Art Center from noon to 4 p.m. Admission is free, but donations are accepted to help defray Art Center expenses.
– The North Star Corn Maze, one miles north and one mile west of Northwood, Iowa, will be open from noon to midnight. Admission is $5 per person; children under 5 will be admitted free.
– The Albert Lea High School Music Department will present its first concert of the year at St. Theodore Catholic Church at both 6 and 8 p.m. to accommodate the traditionally large crowd. The concert will feature the Chamber Orchestra and the ALHS Symphony Orchestra, directed by Rebekah Crissinger, and the Concert Choir, Varsity Choir and Tiger Choir, directed by Diane Heaney. Tickets for the concert are $7 for adults and $5 for seniors and students and are available at the door. There will also be a family music concert pass sold for $35 that will admit a family to all regular music concerts for the whole year.
– The Prairie River Camp Corn Maze, located three miles south of Interstate 90 on Highway 253, will be open from 7 to 9 p.m. Admission is $5 for those 12 years and older and $3 for ages 5 to 11. There is a family rate of $18.
– Youth for Christ Mini Golf will be open at Northbridge Mall from 7 to 9 p.m. Cost is $5 per person.
– Freeborn County League of Women Voters is sponsoring a debate forum for political offices at 7 p.m. in the lecture hall at Riverland Community College. Commissioner candidates for District 3, City Council candidates for Ward 3 and 5 and mayoral candidates will debate.
Saturday, Oct. 25
– The Albert Lea Farmers Market will be open in the North Broadway Avenue parking lot from 9 a.m. to noon.

– Northbridge Mall will host an ornament, doll and collectibles show from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
– Freeborn County Ducks Unlimited will hold its annual ladies’ luncheon at the Moose Lodge in Skyline Plaza. Doors open at 11 a.m. There will be prizes, games, food and fun. For tickets and more information, call Michelle Breugger at (507) 371-9124.

– Women Out All Night will present a comedy show, “Big Divas, Big Laughs, Big Fun,” at the Ramada Event Center. Featured will be Rox Tarrant, Jodie Maruska, Brenda Elsagher, Susie Saccoman and LeAnn Diler. Dinner seating begins at 6 p.m. and the comedy show starts at 8 p.m. Cost is $30 per person for the dinner and show and $15 for the show only. To reserve tickets, call the Ramada at 373-6471.
– The Albert Lea Solos Club will host a dance at the New Richland Legion from 7:30 to 11:30 p.m.
Sunday, Oct. 26
– The Glenville Fire & Rescue Department will hold its annual pancake breakfast from 7 a.m. to noon at the Glenville City Hall and fire barn. Pancakes, sausage, juice, milk and coffee will be served for a donation.
– The Kiester Volunteer Fire Department will hold its annual pancake breakfast from 7 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Kiester Fire Hall. Blueberry or plain pancakes, french toast, ham, sausage, coffee, milk and juice will be served for a donation.
– American Legion Post 56 will host a pancake breakfast from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Legion. Pancakes, eggs, sausage, potatoes, juice and coffee will be served. Cost is $6 for adults and $3 for those younger than 10 years.
– The North Star Corn Maze will be open from noon to 10 p.m.
– The Prairie River Camp Corn Maze will be open from 2 to 8 p.m.
– Oakland Lutheran Church, 22042 850th Ave., Albert Lea, will hold its lutefisk and meatball supper from 3 to 7 p.m. Cost is $14 for adults in advance or $15 at the door, and $5 for children ages 5 to 10 years. Advance tickets are available at Addie’s Floral & Gifts, Cup of Faith, Ben’s Floral & Frame Designs and Doyle’s Hallmark.
– Albert Lea United Methodist Church will host “Trunk and Treat” and “Pipe Screams.” From 4 to 5 p.m. members of the congregation will have their car trunks decorated with the themes of fall, – Halloween and Thanksgiving. There are treats for the children and fun for all. Following the outside activities, “Pipe Screams” will be held inside from 5:10 to 6 p.m. The concert will feature favorite Halloween songs. The public is invited to come in costume.
