Second quarter hurts Bulldogs

A big second quarter for West Fork lifted it over Lake Mills 42-21 Friday night in Lake Mills.
The Spartans (3-4, 1-4) scored 21 points in the quarter and got big plays from running back Cole Muhlenbrunch. Muhlenbruch scored two touchdowns in the quarter to take the lead over the Bulldogs. Muhlenbrunch scored on a 2-yard run and later ran 46 yards for a touchdown on an interception return.
Lake Mills (2-4, 2-3) turned the ball over three times in the game and the interception return hurt the most as West Fork took a 21-7 lead.
The Bulldogs were dealing with the loss of starting quarterback Brad Midlang and starting running back Jake Brekken both of whom were injured in last week’s game against West Hancock.
Royce Byrnes started at quarterback for Lake Mills went 9-of-26 throwing the ball for 192 yards and two touchdowns. Logan Strusz caught two of those balls for 110 yards and a touchdown.
Levi Dahle, Alex Grunhovd and Chuck Thorson all filled in at running back and Dahle led the team with 55 yards rushing and one touchdown.
The Bulldogs outgained the Spartans on offense 306-285 but the interception return and a punt return hurt the cause.
Cole Muhlenbrunch rushed for 87 yards and Jake Stille added 75 yards on the ground for West Fork as it racked up 198 yards on the ground.
Lake Mills travels to St. Edmond’s next Friday.
