A 63-year-old Lake Mills, Iowa, woman died Tuesday at St. Marys Hospital from injuries she sustained after her vehicle was broadsided on Interstate 35 near the exit to U.S. Highway 65 southeast of Albert Lea earlier that morning.
According to a Minnesota State Patrol report posted Thursday morning, Juanita Olsen was driving northbound on I-35 just before 9 a.m. when she lost control of her 2004 Chevy Suburban and was broadsided by a 2005 Dodge truck.
The truck was driven by 50-year-old Roger Benedict of Indianola, Iowa.
Benedict was treated and released for his injuries.
The State Patrol report stated the road was icy at the time of the incident. Freezing rain was falling Tuesday morning.
The Tribune reported Wednesday that two people were transported to the Albert Lea Medical Center after the wreck that morning, based on information received from the Freeborn County Sheriff’s Office.
The State Patrol did not have a report posted about the wreck until the Tribune inquired into the incident Thursday morning.
This is the second fatal wreck on the interstates in the Albert Lea area that has occurred because of icy roads. Last weekend, one man died and 10 others were injured after the 2004 Econoline van they were riding in lost control, went sideways into the median and rolled several times on Interstate 90 near milepost 159.
So far, there have been 11 fatalities on the highways and byways in Freeborn County in 2008. There were two last year.
