Funeral services for Andrew John Waalkens, age 44, of Hartland will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 17, 2009, at Crossroads Evangelical Free Church. The Rev. Glen Stevens and the Rev. David Hickman will officiate. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m., Monday, Feb. 16 at Bayview/Freeborn Funeral Home and one hour prior to the service at the church. Andrew died Wednesday, Feb. 11, 2009 as a result of a car accident.
Andrew John Waalkens was born July 19, 1964 to Herbert and Barbara (Peterson) Waalkens in Albert Lea. He grew up in the Albert Lea area and graduated from Albert Lea High School. Andy then attended Austin Vo-Tech. On June 24, 1989, Andy was united in marriage to Jodie Hohansee at the Community Lutheran Church in Geneva. While going to school Andy worked at Hy-Vee Foods. For the past 10 years, he has been employed at Cargill. Andy also drove bus for Albert Lea Bus Co. for the school district and worked at the Alden Legion. Andy was a former member of the Hartland Volunteer Fire Department and the National Wild Turkey Federation. Andy enjoyed deer and turkey hunting, fishing, golfing, bowling, playing poker, playing X-Box with his son and spending time with his family and friends. He was loved and will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
Survivors include his wife, Jodie; daughter, Alisha and her boyfriend Shawn Groeneweg; son, Taran; mother, Barbara Waalkens; brothers, Michael (Linda) Waalkens, and Jay (Sue) Waalkens; mother and father-in law, John and Susan Hohansee; grandmother, Dagne Weum; grandmother-in-law, Helen Pierce; sisters and brothers-in-law, Lori (Tom) Leeman, Kari (Jeremy) Hohansee, and Amy (Shannon) VanderSyde; special friends, Jesse and Paula Hanson; many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Andrew was preceded in death by his father, Herbert Waalkens.
