Man who died in rollover identified

The person killed in the rollover Wednesday morning on Minnesota Highway 13 north of Manchester has been identified as a 44-year-old man from Hartland.

According to a Minnesota State Patrol report, Andrew Waalkens died as a result of injuries sustained just before 6:30 a.m. Wednesday. The 2003 Dodge Ram he was driving slid on an icy part of Highway 13 near milepost 8, about five miles north of Albert Lea, entered a ditch and rolled.

The vehicle was traveling southbound, reports indicated. Waalkens was wearing his seat belt and no alcohol was detected, according to reports.

The Freeborn County Sheriff’s Office assisted at the scene.

Waalken’s death is the first traffic fatality of the year in Freeborn County.

In 2008, there were 14. This was the highest number of traffic fatalities in the county for at least five years.

Local authorities have said they hope to reduce traffic fatalities in 2009.
