Four area girls’ basketball players were named to the Minnesota All-State team Monday by the Associated Press.

Albert Lea’s Abbey Arends and Katie Schou earned honorable mention all-state while New Richland-Hartland-Ellendale-Geneva’s Alyssa Kerkhoff and United South Central’s Val Sahr were also named as honorable mention all-state.

Kerkhoff, a sophomore point guard for the Panthers, averaged 22.2 points per game this season in leading NRHEG to the Section 2AA championship game.

Sahr, also a sophomore, averaged a double-double for the Rebels with 11.8 points per game and 11 rebounds. Sahr pulled down a school record 297 rebounds this past season.

Arends, a junior, led the Tigers in scoring with 13.2 points per game and nearly five rebounds a game. She helped guide Albert Lea to a nine-win season after winning seven the year before. Arends led the team in blocked shots, finished second in rebounds and second in assists.

Schou, a senior, was lethal from 3-point range this season. Schou averaged 8.1 points per game and hit seven 3s in a game this season. She shot 31 percent from behind the 3-point line.

Minneapolis South’s Tayler Hill received Player of the Year honors by the AP for the second straight season in leading South to the Class 4A title.
