Woodside, Bison 1 win from NCAA berth

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) — Mike Nelson had 22 points and seven rebounds and Ben Woodside added 21 points and seven assists as North Dakota State moved into the Summit League championship game with a 79-67 win over Southern Utah on Monday.
The regular-season champion Bison (25-6) will try to lock up the tournament title and an automatic berth in the NCAA tournament on Tuesday against Oakland University, which beat South Dakota State in the other semifinal.
Nelson helped NDSU hold Southern Utah’s Davis Baker to eight points. Davis entered the tournament averaging 17.5 points.
Brett Winkelman had 15 points and Michael Tveidt 12 for NDSU, which committed just eight turnovers and shot 51 percent from the field.
Tyler Quinney scored 24 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for the Thunderbirds (11-20), who beat NDSU 74-69 in their last meeting in Fargo. John Clifford added 19 points and 11 rebounds and Dave Marek had 16 points.
The Bison split the regular season series with Oakland, losing the first game 77-76, but winning the last one Jan. 29 81-71 with Woodside scoring 16 points in the win.
Tuesday’s game will be televised on ESPN2 at 7 p.m.
