It was a good day for Albert Lea boys’ golf, especially for senior Mike Falk.

The Tigers broke 300 as a team and Falk broke 70 to shoot 69 Thursday in Waseca.

The course was shortened to a par-69 course because parts of the course were under water, but Albert Lea was able to shoot a career-low 296 to defeat the Bluejays 296-358.

Falk played exceptionally well, finishing an even par on the day. Falk made eagle on No. 15, and was even par after 16 holes. But he bogeyed No. 17 and knew he needed to birdie to break 70. On No. 18 he sank an 8-footer for birdie and a round of 69.

“I’m pretty happy,” Falk said. “I knew I was playing well, I just tried to keep it going.”

Falk’s putting touch was especially deft Thursday. He carded 29 putts for the round and made a number of mid-range putts to preserve the par round.

The low team score was a very encourage sign for the team as it looks to compete for a conference title this season.

“That’s a magical number there,” said Tigers head coach Riley Worth. “The winning scores for a lot of the top teams are low 300s or high 290s. It was great golf.”

Falk gave the team the front runner score it lacked all last season and the rest of the team shot near where it was last season.

Sam Matheson shot 74, Grant Stadheim 76 and Tyler Brackey had a 77 to round out the top four scores.

“Our team has rather high expectations,” Falk said. “To break 300 in our first match, I don’t think anybody expected that. Now we know we can do it.”

Albert Lea hosts Mayo, a team the Tigers have never beaten in Worth’s tenure as head coach, Monday at Green Lea.
