The city of Elko New Market will soon be without a police department.

The City Council voted 3-2 Thursday to get rid of the police department in 30 days.

Officers will be allowed to finish up cases, and in the interim, Scott County Sheriff’s deputies will respond to 911 calls.

The department employed two full-time and six part-time officers. It’s 2009 budget was $329,806.

Deb Crosby doesn’t think it’s the right decision and she is concerned about crime. But councilman Bob Hanna says the city can’t afford the police department.

A plan to contract with the sheriff’s department still needs approval.
