It’s a busy weekend with prom, auction, breakfasts

The Albert Lea High School’s prom will feature glitz and glamour Saturday with Viva…Las Vegas!

The grand promenade will be held at Northbridge Mall beginning at 3:30 p.m., where each couple will be announced. Following the promenade, the public can stop in the ALHS gym and catch a glimpse of the prom experience. Doors will be open from 4 to 6 p.m. so people can view the amazing work of John Fure, prom set designer, and get pictures in Las Vegas! Foto Factory will be available to take photos at the mall before the promenade begins, and also with the prom set from 4 to 6 p.m.

The dance will be held from 8 p.m. to midnight. Students must have a ticket to attend. Parent Communication Network will host the post-prom party at Crossroads Church from midnight to 2:30 a.m.

Following is a roundup of other events happening in the area this weekend.

Friday, April 24

 The Albert Lea Art Center’s Norwegian exhibit and secondary school art exhibit will be open from noon to 4 p.m.

 Zion Lutheran Church, 924 Bridge Ave., will hold a soup and pie or dessert supper from 4 to 7 p.m. Creamy chicken noodle, vegetable beef and chicken wild rice soup and chili will be served. Cost is $6 per person and $3 for children ages 6 and younger. Proceeds will go to the audio/visual fund.

 The third annual Dancing With the Freeborn County Stars, a fundraiser for the Freeborn County Chapter of the American Red Cross, will be held at 7 p.m. in the Albert Lea High School auditorium. A limited number of tickets are available at the Red Cross office. They are $10 for adults and $5 for children 12 years and younger.

The Spamettes will perform at the Lighthouse Event Center, 638 Marshall St., at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $10 in advance and available at Tone Music. Tickets will also be available at the door for $15.

Saturday, April 25

 The American Bell Association, a club of bell collectors, will hold a four-state meeting at the Best Western Holiday Lodge in Clear Lake, Iowa, starting at 9:30 a.m. There will be programs on bells, bells for sale and fellow collectors to share their knowledge.

The Albert Lea Art Center’s Norwegian exhibit and secondary school art exhibit will be open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

 In celebration of National Car Care Month in April, Riverland Community College Auto Service will host a free spring checkup at 10 a.m. at 2200 Riverland Drive in Albert Lea. The inspections include volunteers checking fluid levels, tires, lights and other system components. Volunteers review any discrepancies with the motorist and provide information about maintenance and repair.

 St. Theodore Catholic School will present its annual auction extravaganza, The Fabulous Fiesta, at 6:30 p.m. at the Albert Lea Armory. There will be food, music and silent and live auctions. Tickets are $15 per person in advance (available at the school office) or $20 at the door.

Sunday, April 26

 American Legion Post 56 will hold a pancake breakfast from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Legion Club, 142 N. Broadway Ave. Pancakes, eggs, sausage, potatoes, juice and coffee will be served. Cost is $6 for adults and $3 for children 10 and younger.

 Albert Lea Knights Youth Baseball will host a pancake breakfast fundraiser from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Albert Lea Moose Lodge. Tickets are $5 per person. Children 3 and younger eat free.

 Sons of Norway Normanna Lodge 52 will hold a pancake breakfast from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the lodge near City Arena. Rolled pancakes, scrambled eggs, parslied potatoes, ham, lingonberries, juice and coffee will be served. Cost is $6 for adults and $3 for children.

 The Carpenter Community Club will hold a dance at the Carpenter, Iowa, Community Center from 1:30 to 5:30 p.m. Malek’s Fishermen will play.

 The Suzuki violin students of Crista Bohlmann will present a recital at 2 p.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church.

The Albert Lea Cantori will present its annual spring concert at 4 p.m. at the United Methodist Church in Albert Lea. Admission is free.
