Schaeffer Academy stunned the Glenville-Emmons baseball team Monday in Glenville with a 6-3, come-from-behind victory.
The Lions used a five-run fifth inning to over take the Wolverines and hand them a surprising defeat.
Last season Glenville-Emmons defeated Schaeffer Academy 21-4 in the season opener.
“We didn’t play well,” said Wolverines head coach Louie Toulouse. “I was disappointed with our effort.”
Glenville-Emmons was coming off the heels of a big victory over conference rival Houston and jumped out to a 3-0 lead after three innings behind a Zack Williamson two-out RBI single and a Tyler Woodside triple that brought in two runs. But the Wolverine offense went kaput from there on out.
“We quit swinging at strikes,” Toulouse said. “We started swinging at some balls in the dirt.”
Glenville-Emmons (2-2, 2-1 SEC) struck out a total of 10 times in the game.
Schaeffer Academy scored the go-ahead run with two outs in the fifth inning. The Lions No. 9 hitter reached on a walk and they got four straight hits. The Wolverines committed two errors, one of which allowed the tying and go-ahead runs to score.
Garret Schumaker took the loss, despite five effective innings. Schumaker struck out eight hitters, allowed four hits, but only three of the six runs he allowed were earned.
Glenville-Emmons faces Hope Lutheran Thursday.
