St. John’s Lutheran Home of Albert Lea has been honored with the Innovation of the Year Award from the state’s largest association of older adult services professionals.
St. John’s Lutheran Home uses concepts of horticulture to build confidence, relieve stress and give residents a sense of purpose. This ultimately improves the quality of life for its residents. St. John’s was presented the award at the Aging Services of Minnesota Institute in February in Minneapolis.
“This program is based upon the philosophy of enabling an individual to do as much as they can independently, with appropriate assistance, has grown, providing, emotional, social and Christian care for the residents of St. John’s — in just three years,” said gardening program director Nancy Sather.
The program has evolved from being led by one person using volunteer hours to a program supported by St. John’s Lutheran Home and the community.
“This program brings families together,” said Wanda Wangsness, the materials manager. “It brings our residents here at St. John’s back to their roots, back to what they know best.”
For over 40 years, Aging Services of Minnesota has earned its reputation as a leader in older adult services. The members of Aging Services represent the complete continuum of care, including care centers, assisted living and senior housing with supportive services, independent senior housing and community-based services.
