After delay G-E, A-C split series

A split of a doubleheader seemed the logical conclusion Saturday when the Alden-Conger and Glenville-Emmons baseball teams took the field in Glenville.

The Wolverines took the first game of the doubleheader 8-7, but the Knights came back in the second game for a 10-8 win.

As long as it took to get the Alden-Conger and Glenville-Emmons baseball teams to take the field, it took nearly as long to decide who would win the first game of a doubleheader Saturday in Glenville.

The two teams were originally scheduled to play each other April 17, but date was moved to May 1 and would be played as a doubleheader. A scheduling conflict occurred and Glenville-Emmons couldn’t play so nearly a month from the initial date the two teams met for a doubleheader.

On an overcast and windy day the Wolverines somehow found a way to win despite trailing the first 3 1/2 innings.

With one out and the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh Kyle Thompson hit a ground ball to shortstop that allowed Jake Kirsch to score from third to give Glenville-Emmons the 8-7 win.

The Wolverines threatened in the fourth inning but a pair of heads-up plays by the Knights prevented Glenville-Emmons from doing further damage.

In the fourth inning with three runs already across the plate to tie the game at 7, Alden-Conger recorded two consecutive outs at third base to keep the Wolverines at bay.

Glenville-Emmons did its part on defense in the sixth inning. Lucas Kleinschrodt took off for third base on a steal attempt and decided to break for home after the throw got away from third baseman Garret Schumaker. Schumaker retrieved the ball and fired home in time to cut down Kleinschrodt at the plate.

Zach Nelson picked up the win in relief of starter Jon Mittag. Nelson threw three innings of scoreless ball. He allowed just one hit and struck out four.

In the second game the Knights jumped out to a 10-1 lead after the third inning with Brad Ferree and Spencer Niebuhr leading the way. Ferree drove in four runs with a 2-for-3 night and a double while Niebuhr drove in three runs on 3-for-3 hitting.

Matt Jensen was cruising on the mound for Alden-Conger until the fifth inning when six Wolverine hitters collected base hits on two-strike counts. Glenville-Emmons scored five runs in the frame to climb back into the game and later added two in the seventh for the 10-8 final.
