Triathlon, recital, tea party take center stage

The fifth annual Land Between to Lakes Triathlon will be held at 9 a.m. Sunday.

The race start and transition will be at the east end of Edgewater Park. The race will begin with a .25-mile open water swim in Fountain Lake. Participants will then do a 19.8-mile bike race through Albert Lea area countryside, fairly flat with some rolling hills, mostly on newly paved roads. Finally, racers will do a 4.2-mile run along scenic Edgewater Park and Fountain Lake, fairly flat and fast course with minimal traffic.

The public is welcome to come and watch the event.

Friday, May 15

 Members of VFW Post 447 and its auxiliary will sell Buddy Poppies at several Albert Lea locations all day.

 The gardening committee of St. John’s Lutheran Home will hold a yard and plant sale from noon to 3:30 p.m. in the Highway 13 parking lot at the nursing home. Proceeds will benefit the residents’ gardening projects at the nursing home.

 The Bonnie Broitzman, Steve Tubbs, Chris Charlson and Dustin DeBoer exhibits will be open at the Albert Lea Art Center from noon to 4 p.m.

 The Friends of the Albert Lea Public Library will hold a spring book sale for members from 4 to 7 p.m. in the city hall garage off Fountain Street. Memberships can be purchased at the sale for $5. Book donations will be accepted starting at noon.

 The Diamond and Denim Food & Wine Tasting will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Fairlane Community Building on the Freeborn County Fairgrounds. Proceeds benefit the Good Samaritan Society in Albert Lea. Tickets are $20 per person and are available at Hy-Vee, Doyle’s Hallmark, Sterling Drug and the Good Samaritan Society. Dress to dazzle or go casual.

 The Northwestern Singers will present a concert at 7 p.m. at St. Edward’s Church, 2000 W. Oakland Ave., Austin. Tickets are $10 per person and are available at Hy-Vee in Austin, Tone Music in Albert Lea and at the door.

Saturday, May 16

The Friends of the Albert Lea Public Library will hold a spring book sale from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the city hall garage off Fountain Street.

 The Shades of Jade Regional Garden Club will hold a plant sale beginning at 8:30 a.m. at Northbridge Mall.

 The Albert Lea Farmers Market will be open from 9 a.m. to noon in the North Broadway Avenue parking lot.

 Albert Lea Boy Scout Troop 7 will hold a rummage sale and flea market from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the North Broadway Avenue parking lot. This is a fundraiser for summer camp expenses.

 Hometown Pride Cleanup Day for Albert Lea residents will be from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday at the Albert Lea Transfer Station and Demolition Landfill. The cleanup day provides residents the opportunity to dispose of most items free of charge or at reduced rates on certain items.

 The 14th annual Albert Lea Wrestling Golf Classic will be held at Green Lea Golf Club. Registration begins at 10 a.m. There will be a shotgun start at noon. A pork chop supper will be served from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. For more information, call Connie Kermes at 373-4443.

The Albert Lea Art Center will host a proper English tea at 1 p.m. at the Art Center. Cost is $15 per person. Reservations are needed; call the Art Center at 373-5665.

 Joyce Matthies Dancers will hold their end-of-the-year recital at the Marion Ross Performing Arts Center. Performances are at 2 and 7 p.m. All seats are reserved. Tickets maybe purchased at the box office Saturday morning from 9 a.m. to noon and 30 minutes before each performance.

 The Albert Lea High School bands will present a jazz concert at 5 p.m. in the ALHS Commons. This concert will be free, and will feature ALHS Jazz I and Jazz II along with special guests, Southern Minnesota’s Real Big Band from Mankato.

 The Northwestern Singers will present a concert at 7 p.m. at St. Edward’s Church, 2000 W. Oakland Ave., Austin. Tickets are $10 per person and are available at Hy-Vee in Austin, Tone Music in Albert Lea and at the door.

 A free coffeehouse concert sponsored by C.A.S.T. (Come And Socialize Together) and featuring the band Bobbye Project will be held from 8 to 10 p.m. at Crossroads Evangelical Free Church. Food and child care are available. For more information, call the church at 377-3276.

Sunday, May 17

 The Albert Lea Alano Society, 1005 N. Ulstad Ave., will hold a pancake breakfast from 8 a.m. to noon. Pancakes, french toast, hashbrowns, eggs, sausage, coffee and juice will be served. Cost is $5 for adults and $3 for children 10 and younger.

 The Albert Lea Masonic Lodge, 147 N. Broadway Ave., will hold an amaranth pancake breakfast from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Eggs, sausage, pancakes, orange juice and coffee will be served. Proceeds will go toward scholarship and the food shelves. Those attending are asked to bring a canned food item.

 The Albert Lea Elks Club will hold a pancake breakfast from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Pancakes, eggs, hashbrowns, sausage, juice and coffee or milk will be served. Cost is $5 per person.

 Trinity Lutheran Church will hold a Dad’s Belgian Waffles breakfast from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Fairlane Community Building on the Freeborn County Fairgrounds. Cost is $6 per plate. Children 5 and younger eat free.

 The event will benefit the ELCA National Youth Gathering in New Orleans.

 Community Lutheran Church in Geneva will hold a meatball dinner from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Meatballs, mashed potatoes, gravy, corn, coleslaw, rolls and pie will be served for donations.

 Several Albert Lea High School senior vocalists will perform a recital of vocal solos and ensembles for the public at 2 p.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church in Albert Lea. The public is invited. Admission is free. Refreshments will be served after the recital.
