The Lake Mills July Jubilee is set for Friday through Sunday.
“One of the focuses of our July Jubilee committee is to really focus on families,” said Marilyn Hoffman, director of the Lake Mills Chamber Development, the group that oversees the July Jubilee.
One of those family-focused events will be free inflatable games in Oakwood Park starting from 11:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday. Also in the park will be other kid-friendly games and activities like face painting. Parents will run concessions during that time as a fundraiser for the eighth-grade Washington, D.C., trip.
From noon to 3 p.m. Sig’s Band, Sheltered Reality and Latino Band will perform.
“We think with this economy, it’s really important that families have a place to take their kids to have fun, and it’s not going to cost them an arm and a leg,” Hoffman said.
The kiddie parade is at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, and the July Jubilee Parade is at 10:30 a.m.
At 7:30 a.m. Saturday, there will be a 5-kilometer run and walk beginning at Stutzman Physical Therapy at 110 N. Washington St.
One new event this year will be a lawnmower race sanctioned by the Iowa Lawnmower Racing Association to be held on the west side of town at 1 p.m. Saturday. There will also be a mud bog there at the same time.
“Last year Oakwood Park, where we have the kid’s games, was just packed. We have an excellent turnout,” Hoffman said.
Not all the events are aimed at the youth, as there will be two street dances at Silverado’s from 8 p.m. to midnight. Friday will feature Mill Street Band, and Saturday will feature Canyon Cowboys. Admission is $5 each night.
The events begin Friday with sidewalk sales, bake sales and rummage sales at the Civic Center from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. There’s also the Little Mr. and Miss Contest at the Mills Theater at 5:30 p.m.
“There’s a lot of activity, there’s people uptown checking out the sidewalk sales. They’re just all over town,” Hoffman said.
Sunday, the last day of events, will include things like a radio controlled air show from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and a classic car and motorcycle show will be held at 10 a.m. at North Mill Street and North First Avenue.
“We just invite everybody to come down and enjoy themselves,” Hoffman said. “Lake Mills is a great little town, and we like to let people see how friendly everybody is.”
