Breakfast benefits and concerts fill weekend

A.G.E. (Assisting Glenville’s Elderly) will hold a pancake breakfast from 7 a.m. to noon Sunday at First Lutheran Church of Glenville. Biscuits and gravy, biscuits with jelly, scrambled eggs, sausage, juice and coffee will be served for a donation.

There will also be a bake sale by Bone Builders.

A.G.E. is a Living at Home Block-Nurse program.

Following is a roundup of other events happening in the area this weekend.

Friday, Dec. 4

The Festival of Trees will be open at the Albert Lea Art Center from noon to 4 p.m.

 Destination Albert Lea and the AARP/Blue Zone Vitality Project are sponsoring the following downtown events. There will be caroling down Broadway starting at 5:30 p.m. Carolers should meet at the courthouse. Santa will lead the group in a fire truck. The Fountain Street Brass will accompany the group with carols. At 6 p.m., the City Christmas Tree will be lit. Todd Utpadel will sing carols at the tree. At 6:30 p.m., “A Christmas Story” will be shown at the Marion Ross Performing Arts Center. Tickets for the movie are $1. The Salvation Army will provide free popcorn. Christmas cookies, coffee and cider will be available during intermission.

Church of Christ-Christian, 1705 SE Marshall St., will hold its 16th annual drive-through live nativity from 7 to 9 p.m. Admission is free.

SimpleGifts with Billy McLaughlin will perform at the Lighthouse Event Center, 638 Marshall St., at 7:30 p.m. Advance tickets are $20 for adults and $10 for students and available at Tone Music. At the door, tickets are $25 for adults and $12.50 for students.

Saturday, Dec. 5

The Freeborn County Humane Society will be serving a pancake breakfast 7 to 10 a.m. at Applebee’s Restaurant in Albert Lea. All proceeds will go to the Freeborn County Humane Society’s homeless dogs and cats for their care and well-being.

Hayward Lutheran Church will hold its annual cookie sale from 8 a.m. to noon. There will also be drawings at noon from a quilt, a wooden quilt box and a wooden children’s rocker.

Oakland Lutheran Church, 22042 850th Ave., Albert Lea, will hold its annual soup and pie lunch and craft and bake sale from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Cost is $6 for adults and $4 for children. Preschoolers eat free.

 Northbridge Mall will hold a model railroad show from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The Festival of Trees will be open at the Albert Lea Art Center from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Art Underground, in the historic Bessessen building at 224 S. Broadway Ave., features “Passing the Torch,” the work of Jan Schewe. The exhibit is open from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturdays through Dec. 19.

Sunday, Dec. 6

Northbridge Mall will hold a model railroad show from noon to 5 p.m.

 The annual Christmas concert at First Lutheran Church of Albert Lea, “Sounds of the Season,” will be held at 7 p.m. The concert will feature the Albert Lea Community Chorus, the One-A-Chord Singers, the Northwestern Singers and the Southeastern Minnesota Symphonic Orchestra. It is under the direction of Brock A. Besse. Tickets are available at Tone Music, First Lutheran Church and at the door. In advance, tickets are $10; at the door the cost is $12. Children under age 6 will be admitted free.
