What do the Republicans expect the Democrats to do when it comes to health care?

It seems that all that is coming from the Grand Old Party are alarmist falsehoods about what is wrong with the health care bills. Would they prefer the Democrats to just stop seeking reform in the health care industry altogether?

Imagine the Democrats saying: “OK, Republicans, you are right. Heck, if that millions of Americans either lack health insurance coverage or have inadequate health insurance really at all, then it really doesn’t bother us, either. You know, if you don’t mind that the World Health Organization says countries like Columbia and Morocco have a better system than we do, and for less per-capita cost, then we know your money-saving ideals must be simply on the fritz right now. Let’s just forget this health care episode altogether. We’ll just wait till you come to your conservative senses, like you were 20 years ago or so. What should we do in the meantime? Hmm. Let’s start talking about a repeal of the No Child Left Behind Act instead. Didn’t you guys give us that one?”

Look, health care reform is important. What will come out of Washington will not be pretty and will not be perfect, but it will be an attempt, which is better than what is going on now. That attempt will have aspects that Republicans, Democrats and centrists all will dislike. Like that old adage about committees, the health care measure will be a camel, not a horse.

It’s fine to discuss. It’s fine to oppose. Let’s just drop the scare tactics. For instance, one Republican claimed — falsely — that the legislation would kill 36,000 American women.

The truth is the legislation would remove the out-of-pocket costs for mammograms, which likely would result in more women getting them.

Let’s talk truth. The lies are getting old, and they only make Republicans sound desperate.
