The Lake Mills/Northwood-Kensett wrestling team captured second place at the North Iowa Conference Tournament Saturday and crowned two wrestlers as conference champions.

LMNK scored 161 points and finished behind champion Osage, which scored 233 points and had six conference champions.

Royce Byrnes at 152 pounds and Jake Brekken at 285 won championships for LMNK while Cameron Batton at 112 and Spencer Capitani at 135 placed second.

“It was nice to see Royce and Jake win their first NIC titles, and Spencer wrestled a great match against the No. 1-ranked kid in the state,” said LMNK head coach Alex Brandenburg. “It was nice to go from last place a year ago at conference to second place this year.”

Logan Butler at 103, Calvin Beal at 140, Isaac Buffington and Levi Dahle at 189 all captured third place finishes.

Byrnes defeated West Hancock’s Gunnar Clark 7-3 in the finals and Brekken earned an 8-2 decision over West Hancock’s Nick Aitchison for the title.

Osage’s Trevor Hejhal pinned Capitani in 5 minutes, 28 seconds while Jobe Goodale earned a 13-5 major decision victory against Batton.
