Northstar is closed except by telephone

The owners of Northstar Powersports & Marine spent most of Monday in meetings with insurance adjusters, engineers and structural contractors to figure out what to do next with the building.

“Inside, it looks like a bomb went off,” said owner Brian Berhow.

The roof of the center section of the 19,000-square-foot building collapsed on Friday afternoon as a result of too much snow and ice on the roof.

Berhow and Craig Stickfort are the owners of Northstar Powersports.

Berhow on Monday said the business remains closed except via telephone.

“I think I may have sold a boat today,” he said, surprised.

The business hopes to maintain an answering machine on the business phone, 373-9000, and it will find a new location to set up computers. Staff also will use their cell phones.

“Hopefully, our customers will remain patient and loyal to us,” he said.

The fallen roof crushed some of the showroom inventory. Berhow said he is unsure what. At first glance, it’s clear some motorcycles were damaged.

“We’re hoping to get a crew to lift the roof off again and then see what remains underneath,” he said.

Otherwise, the staff spent part of Monday moving undamaged inventory, such as boats, snowmobiles, all-terrain vehicles and other motorcycles, because the demolition of the building, he said, should start this week, possibly today.

He said the engineering analysts are “98 percent convinced” the weight of the ice and snow caused the fall, matching what the city building inspector determined on Friday.

Berhow said the rain settled on top of snow a few weeks ago, turning it to heavy ice stuck to the rooftop, then snow fell on top of it, and the weight was too much.

“The insurance adjuster said he is getting one a day of these in this area,” he said.
