One Freeborn County Relay for Life team is hosting a wine tasting event on Thursday to raise money for the fight against cancer during what is an otherwise slow part of the year for cancer prevention fundraising.
Nikki Schumaker, one member of the team called the Fiesta Chicks, said the event is something she and the other members have been wanting to do for several years.
“It just seems like you only hear from the Relay people from May through August,” Schumaker said. “We’d like to keep awareness of cancer throughout the year because cancer happens throughout the year.”
The event is from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Wedgewood Cove Golf Club.
The cost is $20 to get in. All funds raised will go to support the local Relay for Life.
Schumaker said Cheers Liquor on West Main Street in Albert Lea is hosting the event. There will be six wine vendors, a liquor vendor and a beer vendor.
There will also be hors d’oeuvres and a silent auction.
Attendants will get a free wine glass etched with “Celebrate, Remember, Fight Back.”
Schumaker said the team hopes to make the wine tasting an annual event.
The actual relay of the Relay for Life will be held on Aug. 13. On this night, people throughout the community come together on teams to socialize, walk and of course raise money for cancer.
Most of the team fundraising has to be done prior to this time, so teams will soon begin an assortment of fundraisers to start earning money for the cause.
