Reception for student art show set for Sunday

The Albert Lea Art Center is hosting the elementary and secondary art show this month. The opening reception will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday.

The annual event will feature the works of up-and-coming artists. There will be works with paint, ceramics, papier mache, clay, watercolors, self-portraits, seasonal art and more.

Artists range in age from 6 to 18 years.

Friday, March 5

A car seat clinic will be held from 8 a.m. to noon at Northbridge Mall.

Northbridge Mall will host a home-based business show from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.

St. Theodore Catholic Church will hold a fish fry from 5 to 6:30 p.m. in Marian Hall. Cost is $8 for adults, $3 for children under 12 years and children under 3 eat free. Fish, baked or mashed potatoes, cole slaw, rolls and ice cream with toppings will be served.

Saturday, March 6

This annual meeting of South Central Chapter of the Sustainable Farming Association will be heldat the First Baptist Church of Clarks Grove with registration beginning at 9 a.m. There is no charge for the meeting. At 9:30 a.m. SCSFA will hold its annual business meeting. The rest of the program will start at 10:30 a.m. with some comments from the new executive director of the Sustainable Farming Association, John Mesko. A noon meal will be available following the morning program, which will include a talk on wind power and breakout sessions on production of food for local markets and on sustainable crop and livestock production. The afternoon will be devoted to a talk on climate change by Julia Olmstead from the Institute for Agriculture and Trade Policy. The meeting will end at about 2:30 p.m. The public is welcome at any part of the program.

Northbridge Mall will host a home-based business show from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Girl Scouts will also sell cookies and Boy Scouts will sell rain barrels during this time.

Moscow Lutheran Church, 25965 870th Ave., Austin, will hold a soup and pie supper from 4 to 7 p.m. Golden split pea and ham, chicken noodle, vegetable beef and bean and ham soups, chili and homemade pies will be served for a donation.

The Southern Gateway Chapter of the Minnesota Deer Hunters Association will hold a fish fry and 15-gun raffle fundraiser at the Albert Lea American Legion Club. The fish fry runs from 4:30 to 7 p.m. Cost is $8 per person. The gun raffle starts at 6 p.m. People must be present to win. Non-MDHA members are welcome. Funds raised will be used for local projects. The Albert Lea Thunder will play Kenai River at 7 p.m. at City Arena.

Sunday, March 7

Albert Lea Junior Gold Hockey will hold a pancake breakfast fundraiser from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the American Legion Club, 142 N. Broadway Ave., Albert Lea. Pancakes, sausage and eggs will be served. Cost is $6 per person. Children 5 years and younger eat free.

The Emmons Commercial Club, Civic Club and library staff will host spuds and sundaes fundraiser from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Emmons American Legion Club. Large baked potatoes and an array of toppings as well as a create-your-own sundae will be served for a donation. Proceeds will go toward expenses for the new Emmons Community Library and the new “Emmons: Gateway to Minnesota” sign along Highway 69.

Northbridge Mall will host a home-based business show from noon to 5 p.m.

Clark, Law, Meitner will play at a dance at the Carpenter, Iowa, Community Center from 1:30 to 5:30 p.m. Admission is $7 per person.

The Albert Lea Learn to Skate program will hold its recital at 4 p.m. at City Arena.
