Show choirs, skating, science fair all on tap for weekend

Las Vegas-style entertainment and friendly competition comes to Albert Lea High School as the show choir, ALHS ‘CAT’aclysmic, will host its 15th annual show choir competition Saturday.
The day will begin at 9:30 a.m. with schools from junior high, prep, class B, and class A divisions. Albert Lea’s Southwest Blue Sky will perform at 10 a.m. and Albert Lea’s SASS group will compete about 11:15 a.m.
After lunch, more schools will compete beginning at 1:15 p.m. Albert Lea CATaclysmic will perform at the end of the afternoon in exhibition at 4:30 p.m. Each choir performs for 25 minutes and meets with an adjudicator for a short critique while watching their performance on a videotape. At the end of the daytime competition, the top three winners from each class will be announced and the five top-scoring teams will be announced.
The grand finale for the day will be the finals show beginning at 7 p.m., featuring these five groups competing all over again for the championship trophies.
Schools competing this year are Albert Lea’s Southwest Middle School, ALHS SASS, Waseca, LaCrosse Logan, Jackson County Central, St. James, Bloomington Jefferson and North St Paul.
Tickets are available at the door and are $10 for adults and $5 for students for the whole day.

Friday, March 12
The elementary and secondary art show will be open at the Albert Lea Art Center from noon to 4 p.m.
The 29th annual KATE Home and Recreation Show will be held at Skyline Plaza from 4 to 8 p.m.
Saturday, March 13
The 50th annual Wells Gun Traders Show will be held from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at United South Central High School in Wells. There will be more than 300 tables. Admission is $5 per person. Children under 14 need to be accompanied by an adult. There will also be a drawing for a commemorative gun. Breakfast and lunch will be available.
The All-School Science Fair will be held at Northbridge Mall.
The 29th annual KATE Home and Recreation Show will be held at Skyline Plaza from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The Big Island Rendezvous will hold a hot dog fundraiser in the food court at Northbridge Mall from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
The Albert Lea Figure Skating Club will present “Blades on Broadway” at 7 p.m. at Albert Lea City Arena. There will be group numbers, solos, duets and a guest skater. This year’s show will also include a number by alumni skaters to kick off the club’s 50th year. Tickets are $8 for adults and $7 for students.
Jennifer Ordalen will perform at Bend in the Road in Manchester from 9 p.m. to midnight.
Sunday, March 14
A pancake breakfast and Czech bake sale to help with maintenance and upkeep of the Brick Hall will be held from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Glenville American Legion Club.

The Albert Lea Masonic Lodge, 147 N. Broadway Ave., will hold a pancake breakfast from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.. Amaranth pancakes, eggs, sausage, orange juice and coffee will be served. Proceeds will go toward the scholarship fund. Members of the Albert Lea High School band will be serving.
