A.L. girls’ soccer falls to Scarlets

The Albert Lea girls’ soccer team had Mankato West in their sights Tuesday night, facing a 2-1 deficit for most of the second half. But the Scarlets scored two goals in the final 12 minutes of the match to put the Tigers away 4-1.

“The same thing keeps coming up,” Albert Lea head coach Rick Barnhill said. “We’re seeing a trend appearing where we’re winning possession in the other team’s half but we’re not maximizing our opportunities, and in our defensive half, things are coming too easy for the opposition.”

Over the past five games, the Tigers have scored on 5 percent of their shots, while their opponents have scored on roughly 20 percent of their shots.

“Collectively, as a team, we just need to think easier and I think we’ll be OK,” Barnhill said.

The Tigers got their lone goal just over 31 minutes into the game on a Gretta Johnson kick, assisted by Sarah Savelkoul.

“It was picturesque,” Barnhill said of the Johnson score. “Probably our best goal of the year.”

Savelkoul crossed the ball and Johnson volleyed it out of the air with her left foot to the back post.

“Sarah delivered the ball in a perfect position,” Barnhill said. “Gretta arrived with great timing from four yards out.”

The Tigers are in action again on Tuesday as they host Owatonna.
