Outdoor recreation, historic visits available in Freeborn

FREEBORN — Although it may be small, Freeborn offers a blend of outdoor recreation and historic opportunities for a leisurely weekend drive.
Freeborn is a 20-minute drive from the heart of Albert Lea, located on the north shore of Freeborn Lake.
Arrowhead Point County Park sits on the on the southeast side of the lake, a little over a mile south of town, the perfect place to see the fall colors.
A visit to Melander School, the restored country schoolhouse, can be arranged by calling Viola Krogsgaard of the Freeborn Area Heritage Society at 507-863-2215. This one-room school was converted into a thriving heritage museum in the spring and sits at the corner of Park Street and Seventh Avenue in Freeborn.
Those with the urge to get out on the greens will enjoy a round of golf at Oakview Golf Course, located at 25177 665th Ave. A local favorite since 1969, Oakview Golf Course is a full-service nine-hole course, open to the public.
Tb3’s Bar & Grill is a sure bet for anyone hankering for a taste of nightlife in this rural Minnesotan community. Rolling Stones Tribune Band Tumblin’ Dice will take the stage at 8:30 p.m. this Saturday. This is their first time playing here, and donations will be taken in lieu of a cover charge.
On Sunday, Tb3’s will host a Sunday Steak Fry. Featured the second and fourth Sundays of each month from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., they feature steak and two porkchops, baked potato, and choice of lettuce salad or cottage cheese.
“We usually do a Ribeye, but this weekend, it could be a T-Bone,” said Dawn Beckmann of Tb3’s. Tb3’s is located at 408 Park St. in Freeborn.
