ALGONA — Authorities say a teenager from suburban Minneapolis is charged in one of two store clerk killings in northern Iowa, and charges are pending in the second death.

Courtney Greene of the Iowa Department of Public Safety said 17-year-old Michael Richard Swanson, of St. Louis Park, Minn., was charged Tuesday as an adult in Kossuth County with first-degree murder and first-degree robbery.

He’s accused of killing a clerk at the Crossroads gas station in Algona about 9 p.m. on Monday.

Greene says charges are pending against Swanson in the killing of another clerk at a Kum and Go in Humboldt about 10:30 p.m on Monday.

Court documents identify the Algona convenience store clerk as Vicky Bowman-Hall.

The second victim, allegedly shot by Swanson in Humboldt, has not been identified.

According to the charges, Swanson entered the Crossroads convenience store with a loaded handgun and a duffel bag, demanded money from the register and that cigarettes be put in the bag.

Bowman-Hall complied. Swanson then allegedly shot her in the face. She was pronounced dead at arrival at Kossuth Regional Health Center.

Officials say Swanson was taken into custody at 11:40 p.m. Monday in Webster City and transferred to the Kossuth County Jail.

The investigation continues and charges are pending.

Assisting the Algona Police Department in the investigation are the Iowa Department of Criminal Investigation, the Kossuth County Sheriff’s Department, the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Department, the Iowa State Patrol, the Webster City Police Department and the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Department.
