Here are highlights in history for Dec. 5, gleaned from the files of the Albert Lea Tribune:

1992 — The Tribune column by Cy Kruse, School District 241 Superintendent, honored Jerald Beckmann, an Albert Lea High School social studies teacher, who had died earlier that week.

1982 — Larry Lavitt of Austin was named as the new president of Lea Foods. This new Albert Lea firm was a joint venture partnership formed by Land O’Lakes of Minneapolis and Imark Industries Inc., of Genesco, Ill.

1942 — Albert Lea’s civic organizations honored Edgar L. Hayek for his 10 years as the city’s mayor, the longest term served by anyone in this position.
