AUSTIN- Anna Anderson scored the game winning goal 1 minute 4 seconds into overtime as the Albert Lea girls’ hockey team defeated the Willmar Cardinals 1-0 Wednesday in the Consolation Finals at the Austin Merchants Holiday tournament.
Anderson created a break way opportunity in overtime and while being hauled down, she was able to get the puck past the Willmar goal-tender to give Albert Lea the win.
“We played very very well in our own end,” Albert Lea coach Paul Willett said. “They played well against us, but we were able to capitalize in overtime.”
Of the 14 games they have played this season, seven of them have gone into overtime.
Sydney Conley earned the shutout as she recorded 24 saves.
“Sydney has been incredible for us,” Willett said. “For a kid who is in eight grade, for her to step up big game after big game for us is huge.”
Willmar out-shot the Tigers 24-18 during the game.
The Tigers are back in action on Tuesday when Albert Lea travels to play Rochester John Marshall.
