Tigers top Big Nine-leading Panthers

Eric Carlson scored two goals Tuesday as the Albert Lea Tigers boys’ hockey team upset Big Nine-leading Rochester Century 3-1 at the Rochester Recreation Center.

“It’s a big win,” Tigers head coach Roy Nystrom said. “We forechecked the daylights out of them and bottled them up on their end. We played hard, solid team game.”

Carlson put the Tigers (9-5, 3-1 Big Nine) ahead 1-0 with a goal 7 minutes and 22 seconds into the first period.

The Panthers’ (6-4, 4-1) Wyatt Travis scored at 15:31 to tie after the first.

Carlson and Larry Olson scored goals for the second period to take a 3-1 before a scoreless third.

With the win, the Tigers force a three-way tie atop the Big Nine Standings. The Tigers, Panthers and Mankato West Scarlets are all 3-1.

The Tigers play the Scarlets at 7:30 p.m. Thursday in Mankato.
