The Albert Lea Tigers wrestling team won the eight-team Champlin Park Rebel Duals Saturday at Champlin Park High School.

The No. 6 Tigers (19-3, 8-0 Big Nine) had five wrestlers finish the tournament undefeated and knocked off the No. 8 White Bear Lake Bears in the title match.

The Tigers beat St. Francis 60-9 in the first round behind six falls before beating Eagan in the semifinals 48-21.

Against White Bear Lake, Tigers head coach Larry Goodnature moved Garrett Wangsness from 112 pounds to 119 pounds to face Alex Rod, one of the Bears’ top wrestlers. Tylor Nelson filled the 112 pound slot and the Tigers gained momentum early.

No. 6-ranked Dakota Wangsness earned a 3-1 decision over the Bears’ No.3 Mat Metuwissen at 103 pounds and Nelson picked up a fall at 112. At 119 pounds, Garrett Wangsness added another six-point fall to pull the Tigers ahead 15-0.

“We got off to a great start,” Goodnature said. “The Wangsness boys did what they’ve been doing all year and were big leaders in the dual.”

Tristan Westerlund, Trey Hable and Conner Kortan, Caleb Gaudian also earned falls for the Tigers, who beat the Bears 48-25.

Goodnature said that the Tigers wrestled flat during the first two matches and that he asked his team to turn it up a notch against the Bears.

“The kids responded,” he said. “When the competition is tough, they dig deep, shift gears and wrestle hard. The Bears are a good team and I think they thought they could get us, but we just wrestled unbelievable.”

The Tigers wrestle again at 7 p.m. Thursday against Rochester John Marshall at Albert Lea High School.
