Editorial: Insurance, LGA and the fire dept.

If you live in Albert Lea and are still on the fence when it comes to the critical issue of local government aid, consider this:
If Albert Lea ever has to go to a volunteer fire department as a result of continued state reductions to local government aid — as some cities have done — homeowner insurance rates will go up citywide the very next day.
That’s right. Not only will cuts to LGA likely result in increased property taxes, they could result in higher insurance rates, too.
LGA and rural Minnesota has taken the brunt of state budget woes, and this year, it should be the Twin Cities metropolitan area’s turn. The state ought to honor its prior commitment on LGA levels to rural cities and counties. Otherwise, it’s like breaking a promise.
Besides, without more scrutiny of other areas, the problem of budget deficits can only continue each year. We urge lawmakers to look at state programs that benefit mostly the metro area. Property wealthy areas do not need state help the same as other places. It’s common sense.
