Hockey moms to square off at City Arena

The fifth annual Albert Lea Hockey Day at City Arena on Saturday is a sure to be a winner for hockey fans of all ages.
Boys and girls from the Pee Wees to high school teams will square off in various games throughout the day, with teams traveling to the event from Mason City, Iowa, Red Wing, Mankato, Austin and Waseca.
The event begins at 8 a.m. with a Pee Wee Skills Competition, followed by contest in the U12 Girls, Bantams and Squirts divisions. Trophies will be awarded to first and second place in each division.
The public is invited to skate with the members of the girls’ and boys’ high school Tigers teams at 1 p.m. The Hockey Mom Shootout is another sure score for the day.
Have lunch during the tailgating event in the parking lot, starting at 11 a.m., where hot dogs, brats and pop will be available for purchase.
Raffle tickets are available for $10 each, with a drawing at 4:30 p.m. to include a $2,000 cash prize, a $1,000 cash prize, a Samsung 46-inch LCD TV and more.
Adults only are invited to a mixer at the Moose Lodge beginning at 6:30 p.m.
Several other fun events are sure to be crowd pleasers around Albert Lea this weekend, including:
Friday
• Enjoy the creative works of local artists at the Albert Lea Art Center’s All Member Show. The exhibit goes through Feb. 19 at the Albert Lea Art Center, located at 224 S. Broadway Ave. The Art Center is open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays.
• All ages are invited to stargazing with Mike Lynch, a family friendly celestial show in the skies over City Arena, from 7 to 9 p.m. in Conference Room No. 1 at City Arena. Admission is $12 per person or $22 per pair. Those attending are encouraged to bring lawn chairs for seating.
• The Albert Lea Eagles Club is hosting a Texas hold ’em tourament starting at 7 p.m. and a karaoke and dance with Tom Minehart starting at 7:30 p.m.
• The Good Samaritan Society Project Outreach is hosting a basket night from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Leo Carey American Legion Post 56. On the menu are your choice of hamburger, pulled pork or chicken strips with fries and beverage for $8 per person. Proceeds will benefit the Good Samaritan Society Mission, which helps men, women and children in need in Bogata, Columbia.
Saturday
• Geneva Bar & Grill is hosting its second annual Texas hold ’em tournament.
• The Women’s Health Care Symposium will be held from 8:30 a.m. to noon at Wedgewood Cove. A free breakfast will be provided with pre-registration by calling 507-379-2046. The event is sponsored by Albert Lea Medical Center’s Cardiology and Patient Education Departments, the Naeve Health Care Foundation and the Merck Pharmaceutical Company.
• The entire family is sure to enjoy the 21st annual Tiger City Farm Toy Truck and Collectibles Show from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday throughout Northbridge Mall. Buy, sell, trade and browse through sports cards, collectibles, antique toys and old tractors.
• The Full Draw Archery Club Youth Program will be open to the public from 10 a.m. to noon. A 3-D tournament is open to the public from 5 to 10 p.m.
• Enjoy KB Karaoke at 7 p.m. at the Albert Lea Moose Lodge.
• The Albert Lea Eagles Club is hosting a dance with music by Kat Blu, starting at 8 p.m.
Sunday
• The Albert Lea Eagles Club is hosting a pancake breakfast from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
• The Full Draw Archery Club and Youth Program will hold a pancake breakfast from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Leo Carey American Legion Post 56. Admission is $6 for adults. Ages 6 and under eat free. The club will also host a 3-D tournament from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.
• Wedgewood Cove is hosting the Super Bowl Beanbag Tournament. Registrations are due at noon and the competition begins at 2:30 p.m. Organizers are trying to fill a 16- or 32-team bracket, so if there is an odd number of teams, the first 16 teams to register will have a spot in the tournament. Sign up in advance by calling 507-373-2007. Entry per team is $10 and three teams will receive cash prizes.
