Alyssa Sager scored a school-record 40 points Tuesday as the Albert Lea girls’ basketball team beat the Rochester John Marshall Rockets 70-40 in Rochester.
Sager shot 13-of-22 from the field, 3-of-6 from the 3-point line and 11-of-12 from the free throw line. She broke Abbey Arends record of 38 points set last season.
“It wasn’t a forced 40,” Tigers coach Sean Gillam said. “All the shots were within her range and was going up strong with the basketball.
“Going into the locker room was she excited about the 40 points? Yes, but she was more excited about getting two straight wins. Her perspective was right on target and that’s the kind of kid she is.”
Sager led the Tigers in an efficient night shooting as a team. The Tigers were 25-of-65 from the field and 15-of-18 from the free throw line.
The Tigers forced 38 turnovers and Gillam praised the efforts of Brittani Zuniga who was asked to guard the Rockets’ starting point guard Christina Block.
“She had an outstanding defensive and rebounding night,” Gillam said of Zuniga. “She took Block out of the game.”
In addition to 40 points, Sager finished with 10 steals and seven rebounds.
Taylor Friehl had seven points, five steals and four assists for the Tigers and Ashley Tewes chipped in seven steals and four points.
The Tigers play again at 7:30 p.m. Friday against Mankato East at Albert Lea High School.
