AUSTIN — The Riverland baseball team showed how good it can play and how bad it can play as it split a doubleheader with Schenectady, N.Y., in Cocoa Beach, Fla. Thursday.

The Blue Devils (5-5 overall) lost 6-4 and won 9-2.

In the loss, RCC committed five errors and allowed five unearned runs. Despite out-hitting Schenectady 13-6, they came up short after stranding 13 runners on base.

“We dominated the game except for on the scoreboard and I was disappointed with the outcome,” RCC head coach Scott Koenigs said. “I thought they were a team we could handle.”

The Blue Devils bounced back with a big win as Brad Winkelman, a sophomore from Rapid City, S.D., picked up his second win of the season by striking out eight and scattering seven hits in seven innings.

Albert Lea grad Jordan Mondeel gave RCC’s offense a boost by going three-for-four with a triple and three RBIs.

“We played Riverland baseball in the second game,” Koenigs said. “We had good pitching, good defense and had some timely hitting.”

RCC lost two games on Tuesday to Niagara, including an 8-7 walk-off loss. The Blue Devils threw all freshman in the doubleheader.

“We’re ten games in now and guys are getting sore, but it’s 80 degrees and sunny so you’ve got to enjoy it,” Koenigs said.
