A.L. boys’ track and field places 6th

The Albert Lea Tigers boys’ track and field team placed sixth of nine teams Tuesday in the section true team meet at Mankato West High School.
Tigers coach Kevin Gentz said he expected the team to finished fourth or fifth but the performances by his athletes were remarkably good.
“The boys performed very well,” Gentz said. “Many personal bests were recorded.”
Sean Laurie set a personal best by finishing fourth in the 800-meter run in 2 minutes and 4.11 seconds. Alik Smeed set a personal best with a 6-foot, 4-inch high jump.
Tommy Tiegs placed third in the 100-meter dash in 11.32 seconds and sixth in the 200-meter dash in 23.26 seconds. Brody Sundblad finished third in the 300-meter intermediate hurdles in a personal-best 42.2 seconds. The Tigers 4×100-meter relay team of Kyle Kriewall, Smed, Joey Daniels and Tiegs finished third.
In the field, Kriewall finished fifth with a 19-foot, 11 1/2-inch long jump, and Smed finished eighth with a 19-foot, 3 1/2-inch long jump.
Bryce Deboer finished fourth in the shot put by throwing 44 feet, 6 1/2 inches, and Derik DeVries finished seventh by throwing 41 feet, 10 inches.
The Tigers compete again Thursday against Austin, Mankato West and Owatonna at Austin High School.
