Panthers softball tops Wolverines

GLENVILLE — Jade Schultz struck out eight batters Friday for the New Richland-Hartland-Ellendale-Geneva Panthers softball team in a 5-2 win at the Glenville-Emmons Wolverines.

The Panthers opened up a 2-0 lead in the first off RBIs from Mandy Deml and Stephanie Root.

Tori Raimann opened the game with a bunt single to Wolverines pitcher Kailey Davis and stole second base during the next at bat. Deml then knocked in Raimann with a single to right field, and a sacrifice bunt from Jade Schultz moved Deml to second base. Deml moved to third on a ground out by Kacie Phillips and scored when Stephanie Root reached first base on an error.

Robyn Roe grounded out to Schultz to begin the bottom of the first inning, and Davis doubled to left-center field. Alayna Hall and Devin Cooper both recorded outs to end the inning.

Schultz and Davis exchanged 1-2-3 half innings in the second as Schultz struck out the side swinging.

The Panthers stranded a baserunner at second in the top of the third before the Wolverines got on the board in the bottom of the inning.

Kayla Woodside opened the bottom of the third with a double, and Heather Davies struck out swinging. Roe then singled, moving Woodside to third, and Davis hit a sacrifice bunt to score Woodside.

The Panthers tacked on three more runs over the sixth and seventh inninngs, and the Wolverines scored once more in the sixth.

“Schultz did a good job,” Wolverines coach Lisa Ziebell said. “We’ve been hitting the ball well but I think we were a little tired tonight.”

The Wolverines play again at 5 p.m. Thursday at Kenyon-Wanamingo in the first round of the Section 1A subsection tournament.
